Spindle Whorl

Finds From Wirral – Spindle Whorl

This is a rather beautiful lead spindle whorl which would have been used for spinning thread.

It has some minimal decoration but the amazing thing was that when the soil was removed from the central hole it was found to contain a small piece of string /thread. The string /thread as can be seen from the below photos is made up of three smaller twisted pieces of thread
The whorl has been dated from AD1200-AD1500 but it could have been used for many years and the thread is from a much later date.
The thread has been carefully kept so that hopefully in the future we can subject it for scientific testing to see exactly how old it is.
