Roman Coins

Finds of Wirral
Roman Coins
We have previously recovered a few Roman coins from our investigation sites but here are a few more recent ones . Only the left hand one is in good condition and able to be identified and closely dated.
Some of our previous Roman age coins are in very good condition and it is a source of amusement to us that you can often find modern coins that are in terrible condition after only a few years in the ground while some ancient coins survive much better.

All have been assessed by the experts at the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the links to the individual assessments are below.
From left we have a coin from the reign of Licnius I dating from AD319
And the other three are all listed as Roman Nummus or Radiate AD260-410.
Below are the links to the Portable Antiquities Schemes verified entries.
It is important to record all Roman coins as their pattern of distribution has previously led the discovery of settlements in other parts of the country.
We must state that we are not claiming that we have found a Roman settlement but we are pleased that we are able to add more to the picture of the history of Wirral.
